Win a House Raffle Boom in Austria and Germany
Win a house raffles and competitions are reportedly booming in Austria and Germany, according to a recent article in Der Spiegel Online. With the current economic climate, our European neighbours have been quick to adopt house raffles as a way of selling their property, some with notable success. Similarly to the UK, however, this has not been without hiccups along the way.

The article notes the remarkable success of Traude Daniel who raffled her €830,000 house in southern Austria. With over 18,000 people registering for her house raffle, she quickly sold all 9,999 tickets at €99 each. As she puts it "we were all taken by surprise and steamrolled by the number of people who signed up".

Her success has inspired over 40 other Austrian home owners to attempt the same, as well as several equivalents of Win a House Watch for german language users.

In Germany, it seems, organising win a house raffles and competitions is frought with greater difficulty.

Much as in the UK there is a distinction between raffles or lotteries and competitions or games of skill. Similarly the distinction isn't very clear cut, which makes it all the more difficult for organisers. However, one Munich resident, Volker Stiny seems to have found a way following extensive legal advice.

Entrants pay €19 to take part in an quiz contest. The top 100 players then qualify for the final draw. This way, Stiny explained, the contest does not purely depend on luck. He said the skill element keeps him within the law.

It will be interesting to see how things evolve, both here in the UK and abroad, as organisers continue to test the regulatory waters. I really think the concept has a lot going for it and wish everyone the best of luck, and hope they find their way through to organising win a house raffles and competitions, that are both legal and successful.

It seem Stiny is still fighting but a federal court has ruled against his way of running his win a house contest. The message - in german - reads that he has filed an appeal to the court decision and will be posting updates on this website. Good luck Stiny!
